This Sunday, December 6th, Childhood’s #EyesWideOpen Initiative will be launched in Harlem with Swedish chef/ restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson and a surprise celebrity guest. We will do it at the West Harlem Development Corporation’s (WHDC) third annual Community Holiday Celebration and Toy Giveaway. At the event, gathering 700 children and guardians, Childhood will launch HRH Princess Madeleine’s #EyesWideOpen Initiative and the campaign’s new Adult Digital Tool Kit to raise awareness about child sexual abuse and empower adults to become child protectors.
HRH Princess Madeleine of Sweden and Karini Gustafson-Teixeira, Co-Founders of ThankYou by Childhood, created the #EyesWideOpen Initative to mobilize people to take action in addressing the global challenge of child sexual abuse. Join us by uploading a picture of your eye tagging #EyesWideOpen and Childhood USA on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Next, visit the Adult Digital Tool Kit to learn how to identify, prevent and protect children from sexual abuse.
While the holiday season is a sepecial time for families and friends to gather, it is also a time of heightened risk for child abuse. In more than 90% of cases, children know their perpetrator. In the US, 1 in 10 children are reported as victims of sexual abuse. ThankYou by Childhood hopes to raise awareness about child sexual abuse and to assist the community of West Harlem, and communities across the US, in protecting their children.
The event will also include a young artist contest for the participating children on the theme “every child deserves…” The best drawings will receive special awards and prizes from "H&M" and our celebrities. Everyone in the audience will receive Childhood bracelets and colorful "Happy Socks".
