In the article we posted this past Wednesday, we talk about the upcoming activities Childhood USA have planned for 2013. What were your highlights for this year with Childhood?
I have many great memories from every year I've spent working with Childhood, it is more than six years now! For this year 2012, there are happy memories like our successful gala dinner and symposium at Nasdaq. Then there are also many serious and heavier memories from our project visits in poor and vulnerable areas in the United States. To hear a young girl tell me about her struggles that both of her parents are in prison while she is trying to keep her little baby healthy and safe, makes me very upset. My heart fills up, and I think about how Childhood can help her and her baby… In this case, Childhood granted money to a program so that she could leave her baby at a daycare center and have transportation for school. That changed this girl's situation immensely and because of helping her with daycare for her baby, she can now continue school and get her high school diploma. She hasn't missed a day at school!
You have made several project visits this year; could you tell us some more about them?
I am very proud of all of our projects but one
that sticks out is Kristi House in Miami, Florida. Kristi House runs several
different programs but their main service is the Child Advocacy Center. When a
child has been sexually abused, the child is referred to this center to get
help to work through the trauma. Another program of Kristi House is Project G.O.L.D., which gives support
to girls who have been victims of trafficking. When we visited the
programs in late August they had received money from Childhood so that they
could buy a house that will function as a shelter for these very exposed and
vulnerable girls. Knowing that there are so many girls out there who are
being sexually abused this very moment... leaves me speechless…but what I can
share and have witnessed is the wonderful help and support these girls get once
they reach Kristi House.
What are your goals with Childhood next year?
Next year we have a very special initiative for Childhood. We have been working very hard for all of 2012 on putting together this initiative which is really an awareness-raising campaign for Childhood. The campaign will grab people's attention in a unique and exciting way to help us further our cause. So please stay tuned next year to our Childhood website for updates!
Your official Facebook page is launched today, why did you choose to have one?
We work hard at World Childhood Foundation and it is important for people to be aware of our work and how much the foundation is doing here in the US. Because we have a small office in New York, we all get to do a lot of everything. It varies from office work to reaching out and engaging people around our cause. We have meetings with different charities and groups with similar causes all the time and we are constantly trying to reach out to corporate sponsors to join us in our effort to give all children a happy and secure childhood. I felt that I if can share the work of Childhood this way, too, the better!
