The project provides a Child Friendly Space where at-risk children can learn and play in one of the most violent and marginalized townships in Johannesburg area. Integrated, holistic services are provided to youth and trained staff and volunteers offer structured activities and games to help children express themselves and normalize their lives.

The project aims to enhance the mother-infant relationship and security of infant attachment by supporting the mother’s capacity to care for her infant. Support is provided to mothers at risk in a poor, overcrowded township where crime, violence and abuse are prevalent. Regular home-visits are made by community-based lay women, trained and supervised by Ububele psychologists.

The project aims to strengthen community based structures and processes to prevent child abuse and make children less exposed to abuse in one of the most violent townships in Cape Town. It includes parenting training programs, communications for social change, child participation on different levels, strengthened cooperation between community-based organisations, afterschool care services and corporal punishment campaign in schools.

Kidz Clinic in Boksburg

The clinic is a one-stop, child-friendly facility that provides free services for sexually, physically and emotionally abused children and to non-abuse parents. More than 200 sexually abused children per month are provided with forensic or psycho-social assessments, medical assessment & treatment, therapy, psycho-social intervention and court preparations.

The Care for Kids program works with churches from any denomination that are based in the poor communities and want to respond to the needs of orphans and vulnerable children. Childline provides psycho-social therapeutic interventions and bereavement counseling to child victims of abuse and to parents/care givers. The project also provides prevention training workshops for professionals meeting children and court preparations to children who are obliged to witness in court in order to ensure that child understands his/her rights and improve the child’s ability to testify effectively.

Project: The Parent-Infant Intervention Home Visiting Programme

The program aims to prevent child abuse, neglect and abandonment through antenatal and postnatal home visits targeted towards parents at risk. Home visits are made by lay counselors trained and supervised by Parent Centre. The program has resulted in significantly reduced symptoms of maternal depression and a higher rate of secure attachment between mothers and infants.

Philani Outreach Program

The outreach program supports pregnant women and malnourished children through regular home-visits by volunteers from the community, so called Mentor Mothers. At present, Philani Outreach program has over 120 outreach workers who annually supports over 4000 families with malnourished children or pregnant mothers. Through the non-stigmatizing focus on nutrition, abusive and other at-risk families are identified and supported.

The Gender Violence Programme

South Africa has one of the highest incidences of sexual abuse in the world. Ekupholeni Gender Violence Program annually supports around 450 children who are victims or rape and sexual abuse. It provides a holistic support program including counselling, individual therapy, group therapy, support to parents of young rape victims and therapeutic camps.
