Children from at-risk families spend a large part of their spare time on the streets. The project provides a safe space in a child-friendly centre where street children can engage in games and educational activities without the risk of exploitation. The NGO Dolia –founded by orphanage graduates – works with police, social services and the city council in order to improve the children’s home and school situation. The centre focuses on informing the children about their rights and advocating for children’s rights.

Centre of Early Development

Project: Centre of Early Development
Location: Odessa, Ukraine
Target group: Families at risk

The project focuses on early childhood development combined with the underlying social circumstances for why Odessa has so many street children. The Centre of Early Development provides children from at-risk families with free educational and recreational activities. At the same time both children and parents receive support from both The Way Home and Odessa Social Services in order to overcome various obstacles and risks they face. The project enables The Way Home to expand its efforts to prevent children from facing abuse and neglect and running away from home, ending up on the streets.

Medical and social aid centre for children in the Regional Dermatological and Venereal Hospital for Children

Project: Medical and social aid centre for children in the Regional Dermatological and Venereal Hospital for Children
Location: Odessa, Ukraine
Target group: Street children

The project enables the Regional Dermatological and Venereal Hospital for Children in Odessa to hire psychologists, social workers and care takers. All medical and non-medical personnel undergo training in child rights and how to work with street children. The children are now being given social, psychological, educational and recreational support. Many of the admitted children now request help to attend rehabilitation programs and not return to living on the street.

Model for successful assistance to street children

Project: Model for successful assistance to street children
Location: Odessa, Ukraine
Target group: Street children

The Way Home has outreach workers who find and help street children living in the cellars and sewers of Odessa. The project consists of a center which provides street children with psychological, social, medical and legal assistance. The center staff works to reunite children with their families. When that is not in the child’s best interest, children stay in the center and attend school.

Solutions for children without parental care

Project: Solutions for children without parental care
Location: Kyiv region, Ukraine
Target group: Children in alternative care

The project is introducing an early identification mechanism and short-term foster care services in Kyiv. Children who are temporarily taken from or left by their parents will stay in a foster family while various agencies work with the biological parents. Increased foster care services and improved support to biological families will eventually make orphanages obsolete.

Centre for street children in Mykolaiv

Project: Centre for street children in Mykolaiv
Location: Mykolaiv, Ukraine
Target group: Street children

The project has established a drop-in center where street children are offered social, legal, psychological and medical services. In addition, the center organizes seminars, workshops and pedagogical games as well as after-school activities and homework support. New Century works with social services and parents in order to ensure that the children can eventually be given a safe home environment.

Supporting At-Risk Children in Beregovo

Project: Supporting At-Risk Children in Beregovo
Location: Beregovo, Ukraine
Target group: Families at risk

The project allows school children from at-risk families to attend free after-school activities. The activities, including cooking, outdoor excursions, computer classes and photography, are combined with group sessions with a psychologist and a social worker. The project also reaches out to parents with the goal to improve relationships between children, parents and schools.
